Purpose of ELA 20 Advanced

The purpose of the Pre AP is to engage students in active, high-level learning – this course ensures that all students possess the skills, habits of mind, and concepts they need to succeed at post-secondary level.

Students will be expected to handle heavier homework load than their peers in regular ELA.  Higher order thinking skills will be emphasized; more in-depth analysis of materials, critical thinking about issues, and creative problem solving are examples of this.

In addition to the outcomes and indicators of the curriculum, this program will:

  • Provide a learning environment that encourages independent learning in all language experiences.

  • Provide increased opportunity to apply the writing process with an emphasis on extending thought development, manipulation of words and various formats.

  • Provide a variety of instructional activities that are experiential and authentic learning situations.

  • Provide students with a variety of strategies that incorporate and extend critical and creative thinking.

  • Extend language knowledge (presentations) through speaking and other communication activities.

Summer Reading (Mandatory) (10% of Overall Grade)

Purpose Statement

The main purpose of the summer reading assessment is to extend the curriculum and allow advanced students an opportunity to explore a variety of literature. My philosophy is that summer reading should be both pleasurable and thought provoking, allowing the students to use this reading as a springboard into the material covered in class. Research continues to demonstrate that nothing will improve a student’s overall academic performance in school and in life better than reading.
